Workplace Communication Listening Tour
What We're Hearing Across Michigan Workplaces
A growing research initiative exploring how communication shapes trust, leadership, and organizational health.
27 participants. Five sectors. One emerging pattern.
Why We Started Listening
Organizations across every sector were telling remarkably similar stories. Difficult conversations were being delayed. Trust was declining. HR teams were inheriting problems that started months earlier. We wanted to know whether these were isolated experiences or part of a larger pattern. The Workplace Communication Listening Tour was created to answer that question.
What We Have Learned So Far
Across five sectors, leaders and employees are describing remarkably similar communication challenges.
Why This Matters
Communication isn't just an interpersonal skill… It behaves like an organizational system.
When communication is delayed, avoided, or left unresolved, the effects extend far beyond a single conversation. Trust erodes. Collaboration becomes more difficult. Small concerns become larger problems, and organizations begin paying the cost through turnover, burnout, disengagement, and lost productivity.
The Listening Tour suggests these outcomes are not random. They emerge from predictable communication patterns that can be identified and addressed earlier.
What Makes This Different
Much of the conversation about workplace communication focuses on individual skills:
Better feedback
Better listening
Better conflict management
Those skills matter.
The findings suggest organizations don't simply have people with communication challenges. They have communication systems that either support healthy dialogue or unintentionally allow problems to grow. That shift in perspective changes the questions leaders ask.
Instead of asking: "How do we help people communicate better?"
Leaders can begin asking: "What does our communication system encourage?"
Why Leaders Need to Pay Attention
Communication influences far more than employee satisfaction.
It shapes how quickly problems are identified, how effectively teams collaborate, and how confidently people contribute their ideas. Over time, these patterns affect trust, engagement, retention, innovation, and organizational performance.
When leaders strengthen communication systems, they do more than improve conversations. They improve the conditions that allow people and organizations to thrive.
The Conversation Continues
The 2026 Workplace Communication Listening Tour is only the beginning.
As more organizations share their experiences, we'll continue to identify patterns, publish insights, and explore what healthier communication looks like across workplaces and communities.
Whether you're a leader, HR professional, educator, healthcare provider, or employee, your perspective helps shape this work.
